What happened to Edouard Mendy after Chelsea’s Champions League win

Last week Chelsea clinched their first Champions League trophy since 2012, defeating Manchester City 1-0 in the final at the Estadio do Dragao.

Attacking midfielder Kai Havertz grabbed the only goal of the game three minutes before the halftime interval, latching on to a delicate Mason Mount through ball before slotting it past the onrushing Ederson.

The Blues controlled the remainder of the match, limiting City to just one shot on target despite the Citizens’ plethora of attacking talent.

This was a common theme throughout Chelsea’s European run, conceding just 4.4xG (expected goals) throughout the entire knockout stage.

Whenever the Blues did face any shots on target they were confidently dealt with by Senegalese international Edouard Mendy between the sticks.

Mendy enjoyed a standout debut season at Stamford Bridge, conceding just three goals across 12 Champions League matches, an incredible record for a player that was released by French lower league side Cherbourg in 2014

The 29-year-old has become an instant fan favourite in West London, with his clever distribution and excellent aerial ability offering a cool, composed influence in the Chelsea net.

Mendy is also clearly hugely admired by his national teammates as a video emerged of him being celebrated upon arrival for international duty with Senegal.

The players, including Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, greeted him with a round of applause followed by some chants of “Championes” as Mendy jumped up and down.

Signing Mendy looks to be a masterstroke from Chelsea’s technical director Petr Cech, who previously played for Mendy’s old side Rennes.

Marina Granovskaia revealed that Cech had been scouting Mendy for some time: “As soon as Petr Cech and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in”, the Blues’ director revealed when Mendy joined last September.
