Thomas Tuchel is set to be rewarded with a new contract at Chelsea after guiding the team to the Champions League crown.
Tuchel was handed an 18-month contract when he replaced Frank Lampard a little over four months ago and has achieved a top four finish and secured the biggest trophy in club football after an historic night in Portugal.
Football.London understands that Tuchel held positive talks with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich on Sunday morning just a few hours after Chelsea secured their second European crown in nine years.
The Blues owner, who has barely seen his side play since 2018 owing to visa issues, was in Porto on Saturday night to see his team beat Man City 1-0 at the Estadio do Dragao courtesy it of Kai Havertz’s first half winner.
It is understood that Abramovich held positive talks over breakfast with Tuchel at the Chelsea team hotel on Sunday morning and is convinced that Tuchel is the man to lead the team forward after their stunning turnaround in form since Frank Lampard’s departure.
Tuchel met Abramovich for the first time on the pitch after the win on Saturday night and said afterwards that he could get a new contract after sealing a first Champions League title since 2012.
Tuchel said: “We will speak tomorrow, we will speak later. I am looking forward to this. I can assure him that I will stay hungry. That I want the next title. That I feel absolutely happy as a part of a really ambitious club, a strong group that suits my beliefs, my passion about football in the moment perfectly, so my desire is to go for more victories.
“My desire is to grow as a coach and my desire is to push the group from the first day of the next season. This is what I am all about so it would be nice to meet him a bit closer. We are in contact, but not personally. We are in constant contact and he knows what’s going on from me indirectly and now it is nice to meet him.”
