Kai Havertz has made an admission that could impact Chelsea’s summer transfer plans.

The Germany international was a big-money arrival at Stamford Bridge just under a year ago and following a slow start to life in England he has recently begun to show signs of his quality.

Interestingly, Havertz‘s improvement has coincided with a change of manager as well as his role in the Chelsea side altering.

With Thomas Tuchel preferring a 3-4-2-1 formation it has resulted in Havertz playing as a false 9 rather than the attacking midfield role he was used in during Frank Lampard’s reign as head coach.

And it’s a role the 21-year-old is enjoying.

“I would call it maybe a false nine,” he told Sky Sports. “I’m not the big guy in the middle like some strikers. I play the position a little bit different.

“That’s why it’s good we have a lot of quality players up front next to me, and it’s always easy to play with them.

“For me it’s a good position and I like it. I feel very comfortable there.

“I always like to go into the spaces and get the ball there and I like to play up front near to the goal, that’s also very good for me, so all in all I think I like the position and it suits me.”

In arguably one of his best performances for the Blues as the central striker, Havertz scored and assisted another in a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace last month.

He then followed that up with a brace in the 2-0 win over Fulham.

Those performances coupled with his admission on the role could end up saving Chelsea millions in the summer transfer window.

It’s no secret that the Blues have been tipped to sign a new striker this summer with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland just a few names being linked.

But in signing Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen in a £71m deal last summer, Marina Granovskaia may have already solved Tuchel’s problem position at Chelsea.
