Gareth Southgate has named his provisional squad for the upcoming European Championship, with his decisions raising a few eyebrows.
On Tuesday afternoon, the 33 players selected by the Three Lions boss were announced with the likes of Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Harry Maguire and Jordan Pickford all making the cut.
However, whilst those three have made Southgate’s provisional squad, and will be expected to make the final 26-man squad next week, there has been some anger from Blues fans on social media regarding a snub for Fikayo Tomori.
The defender has excelled at Italian giants AC Milan after joining on loan during the January transfer window, playing a key role in helping them secure a place in the Champions League next season.
But his impressive form wasn’t enough to get a chance to stake his claim for Euro 2020.
And Southgate has explained why Tomori was overlooked, suggesting the Chelsea youngster lacks the versatility to play in midfield like Brighton and Hove Albion’s Ben White and Everton’s Ben Godfrey.
“The private conversations I’ve had with players I’m not going to go into too much,” Southgate revealed when asked why Godfrey and White were called up. “They are both exciting young defenders. There are others we’ve been looking at who we really like.
“Esri Konza had a really good season at Villa, Fikayo has done well at Milan.
“So these two are flexible and play in different roles – right, left and midfield in White’s case.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to get to know them a bit better, for them to work with the team. It works for everybody.
“There’s no way of knowing how long they’ll be with us at this stage but it should be a fantastic experience for all of them.”
